Consumer protection oversight faces ongoing enforcement checks to ensure commercial manufacturers maintain standardized package sizing during extended price commitment periods.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Wednesday assured consumers that manufacturers would maintain the product quantities of 190 monitored basic necessities and prime commodities, ruling out shrinkflation among covered goods.
DTI Secretary Maria Cristina Aldeguer-Roque said manufacturers would not reduce the size, weight, or quantity of products while keeping their retail prices unchanged.
“There will be no such practice. The product quantities will remain the same,” Roque said in an interview.
Last month, Roque noted that manufacturers had committed to keeping the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities unchanged until December 31, 2026.
“Manufacturers know the current situation so this is the way of operating and this is also the way to assist and to help also,” Roque also said.
The DTI’s suggested retail prices cover basic goods such as canned sardines, milk, coffee, bread, instant noodles, salt, bottled water, detergent, laundry soap, and candles.
The price commitments also encompass prime commodities such as luncheon meat, meat loaf, corned beef, beef loaf, condiments, toilet soap, and batteries.
Roque stated that the commitment applies nationwide, spanning from Luzon to Mindanao, with the DTI conducting weekly price checks through its regional offices.
“So far, there have been no violations,” Roque added.
