‘Mt. Kamuning’ footbridge to be replaced with safer, accessible pedestrian walkway

The controversial Kamuning footbridge along EDSA, widely dubbed “Mt. Kamuning” due to its steep structure, will soon be demolished following the opening of a new pedestrian walkway designed to be safer and more accessible for commuters.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. inspected the newly built P55-million footbridge and concourse near the EDSA Busway Kamuning station on Thursday.

Marcos said the old footbridge would be removed after the completion of the new structure.

“We will remove Mt. Kamuning,” the President said. “The first time we saw it… I said what they built was not practical. We had it fixed. We promised to fix it in six months. It was completed in four months.”

The original structure drew criticism from commuters and urban planners for its steep elevation. The nine-meter-high footbridge had 154 steps, making it difficult to use for elderly passengers and persons with disabilities.

During the inspection, Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, along with their son Vincent Marcos, experienced firsthand the difficulty of climbing the old footbridge.

“The old one is not very good at all,” Marcos said.

Officials noted that the Kamuning station area is a key transit point for commuters using the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and the EDSA busway, which together serve around 750,000 passengers daily.

The new pedestrian bridge is equipped with elevators and wheelchair lifts to make it accessible for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and other commuters.

The inspection was also attended by Vince Dizon of the Department of Public Works and Highways and Giovanni Lopez of the Department of Transportation.
