Gotta catch ’em all, again: Pokémon nostalgia takes over Manila

For many Filipinos who grew up watching Ash Ketchum chase his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master, collecting Pokémon cards, or spending hours playing on a Game Boy, the fascination never really disappeared. It simply grew up with them.

Now, that childhood obsession has another place to flourish as the Philippines welcomes its first Pokémon Center pop-up at SM Mall of Asia, bringing the colorful world of Pikachu and friends closer to Filipino fans.

The attraction opened in October 2026, offering Pokémon merchandise and activities for collectors, longtime enthusiasts, and a younger generation discovering the franchise for the first time.

But beyond the plush toys, trading cards, and familiar characters, the pop-up reflects something bigger: the enduring appeal of childhood nostalgia in an age when adults are increasingly willing to spend on the things they once loved.

There was a time when Pokémon cards were traded in school corridors, sometimes with little understanding of how valuable certain cards might eventually become.

Today, collecting has evolved into a hobby that can involve carefully organized card binders, display shelves, limited-edition merchandise, and serious conversations about rarity and condition.

For some fans, the attraction is the excitement of finding a particular collectible. For others, it is the simple pleasure of owning something that reminds them of their childhood.

And unlike many childhood trends that eventually fade, Pokémon has managed to remain relevant across generations.

Those who first encountered the franchise through animated television shows and early video games can now share the same characters with children discovering them through newer games, trading cards, and merchandise.

That cross-generational connection is part of what makes a Pokémon-themed retail experience more than an ordinary shopping stop.

The pop-up opened on October 1 as part of Pokémon’s 30th anniversary celebration, three decades after the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green video games debuted in Japan in 1996.

Visitors can browse official Pokémon Center merchandise, including plush toys, character figures, and anniversary collectibles. Among the highlights reported at the opening were a special 30th-anniversary Pikachu plush and merchandise featuring characters beyond the franchise’s most recognizable mascot.

There is also something for fans who would rather play than shop.

The pop-up features video game demonstration areas and a space where newcomers can learn the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Visitors should note, however, that card tutorials do not necessarily mean trading card packs are available for purchase.

The celebration is not confined to a single store.

A nationwide Pokémon mall caravan is bringing merchandise, interactive games, photo opportunities, and character appearances to selected locations through March 2027.

Following its opening stop at SM Mall of Asia, the caravan has moved to SM East Ortigas, where activities are scheduled through November 8. Upcoming stops include SM Southmall, SM North EDSA, SM Marikina, SM Seaside Cebu, SM Davao, and SM CDO Downtown.

Fans can also look forward to PokéXciting! in Manila on January 23 and 24, 2027, featuring planned performances, character appearances, and a Pokémon parade.

Perhaps Pokémon’s greatest achievement isn’t simply surviving for 30 years. It’s finding ways to remain meaningful to people at different stages of their lives.

A child might see a Pikachu plush toy as a new favorite companion. An adult might see the same character and remember rushing home from school to catch the next episode.

The merchandise may change, the games may become more sophisticated, and the collection may grow more expensive. But the excitement of discovering a favorite Pokémon remains remarkably familiar.

And for Filipino fans who once dreamed of visiting a Pokémon Center abroad, experiencing one closer to home is another small childhood wish coming true.

The Pokémon Center pop-up is located on Level 3 of the North Entertainment Mall at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is scheduled to operate until early 2027.
