The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is advancing plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and digital modeling into Metro Manila’s solid waste and flood control infrastructure through a partnership with the World Bank.
The initiative was outlined during a roadmap implementation workshop focused on establishing a Waste Digital Twin and Command Center. The system aims to modernize tracking across solid waste management operations, drainage pumping stations, and mechanized trash traps throughout the National Capital Region.
A central element of the pilot phase involves deploying an AI-enabled Digital Twin framework across MMDA-operated pumping stations. The technology creates a virtual, data-driven replica of physical facilities to monitor waste accumulation, streamline operations, and accelerate response times to hardware or environmental issues.
MMDA officials noted that real-time monitoring around waterways and pumping facilities will enhance flood mitigation, prevent trash blockages in critical drainage channels, and improve operational coordination between local government units and regional authorities across Metro Manila.
