The Philippine National Police (PNP) has stepped up physical security operations and cyber surveillance measures across the country as Manila prepares to host the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits this coming November.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. directed the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), along with specialized police operational units, to intensify security planning and operational readiness surrounding primary event venues, partner hotels, international airports, and major transit hubs.
The nationwide security directive mandates enhanced police visibility through intensified foot and mobile patrols, alongside the deployment of quick reaction response units in critical areas. In parallel, police units were directed to expand cyber monitoring to counter online threats, disinformation, and misinformation campaigns that could potentially disrupt summit proceedings.
“The PNP is continuously strengthening its security preparations for the ASEAN Summit. We are coordinating closely with concerned government agencies, local government units, and our security partners to ensure the safety of our delegates, guests, and the public. We will remain professional and vigilant while respecting the right to peaceful assembly,” PGEN Nartatez said.
The security buildup comes as Malacañang acknowledged potential protest demonstrations during the gathering, notably from groups opposing the U.S.-backed Pax Silica initiative. While affirming that the government respects the constitutional right of citizens to air their grievances, Palace officials called on demonstrators to keep assemblies peaceful as the nation hosts international heads of state and foreign dignitaries.
PGEN Nartatez emphasized that the heightened police presence is purely a precautionary operational measure designed to maintain readiness without inducing unnecessary public panic. The 49th ASEAN Summit is set to take place in Metro Manila from November 16 to 18.
“Our preparations are primarily precautionary and part of our responsibility as the host country’s police force. We continue to monitor the security environment and assess any emerging threats so that we can respond promptly and appropriately. We will not allow complacency, but we also urge the public not to be alarmed,” he noted.
“The PNP is ready to ensure a safe, peaceful, and orderly ASEAN Summit. We ask everyone to cooperate with security measures and to exercise their rights responsibly,” PGEN Nartatez concluded.
