President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has designated Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento as chairperson of the government panel overseeing the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Malacañang said Wednesday.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Sarmiento would hold the post concurrently, replacing retired Gen. Cesar Yano, who resigned in February.
As panel chair, Sarmiento will oversee the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro and help sustain the gains of the peace process.
Marcos appointed Sarmiento as presidential peace adviser on April 22 following the resignation of Carlito Galvez Jr.
Sarmiento said the concurrent roles would allow closer coordination in advancing the remaining commitments under the peace agreement.
“These roles will complement one another as we accelerate our collective quest to advance the Bangsamoro peace process,” he said.
“The President’s guidance is crystal clear: the Marcos administration will double its efforts in implementing the landmark and historic Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro,” he added.
Sarmiento said the government remained committed to the milestones achieved with the MILF and would work with its counterparts toward the transparent, collaborative and time-bound implementation of outstanding obligations.
He also appealed for continued support from the Bangsamoro people and local and international peace partners.
“Your unwavering support is the bedrock of this journey,” Sarmiento said. “I appeal for your continued, steadfast commitment as we walk this path together, shepherding a lasting and inclusive peace under Bagong Pilipinas.”
