Alex Eala Takes a Front-Row Seat at New York Fashion Week

Alex Eala’s latest New York appearance required no racket.

Days after completing her deepest run yet at the US Open, the 21-year-old Filipina tennis star traded the tournament grounds for New York Fashion Week, taking front-row seats at shows by Tory Burch, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein.

The appearances marked Eala’s first Fashion Week and came during a season in which her profile has grown considerably beyond Philippine tennis.

Eala entered the WTA Top 20 for the first time in August and climbed to a career-high world No. 18. Her 2026 season has also included a title in Washington, a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon and a third-round finish at the US Open.

That sporting context makes her arrival at Fashion Week more than an outfit story.

Eala is entering spaces traditionally occupied by actors, musicians, models and other global cultural figures at precisely the moment she is establishing herself among the world’s leading women’s tennis players.

And the fashion world’s interest had begun even before she took her first front-row seat.

Ahead of Fashion Month, Vogue included Eala among the athletes it identified as possible new faces in the front rows following a summer of major sporting performances.

By September 10, she was there.

A first taste of Fashion Week

Eala made her New York Fashion Week debut at Tory Burch’s Spring/Summer 2027 presentation, where she attended as an athlete guest.

She wore a red blazer over a striped shirt with wide brown trousers and was seated among guests that included Anna Wintour, Amanda Seyfried and Lauryn Hill.

For Eala, the experience was genuinely new.

“This is my first fashion week,” she said.

She also drew a connection between her profession and the world she was discovering, noting that both sport and fashion allow people to express their personalities.

It was an appropriate observation for tennis.

Unlike many team sports built around uniforms, professional tennis gives players considerable room to develop recognizable on-court styles within tournament dress rules. Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Naomi Osaka and other leading players have demonstrated how closely sporting identity and fashion can eventually intersect.

Eala was not claiming a place in that company. But her first Fashion Week was an introduction to the same intersection of sport, personal style and public image.

And Tory Burch was only the first stop.

From tennis whites to black and white

The following day, Eala attended the Michael Kors Collection Spring/Summer 2027 show at the Museum of Modern Art’s Sculpture Garden.

This time, she appeared in a black dress paired with gloves and kitten heels.

The collection itself drew inspiration from modernist artists including Alexander Calder, Carmen Herrera and Ellsworth Kelly, as Michael Kors used the museum setting for a presentation built around graphic shapes and sculptural influences.

Eala joined guests including Gabrielle Union, Olivia Munn, Lea Michele, Kathryn Newton, Lori Harvey and Natalia Bryant.

Then came Calvin Klein.

For Calvin Klein Collection’s Spring 2027 presentation, Eala switched from black to white and again took a front-row seat, this time alongside an international guest list that included Pamela Anderson, Sadie Sink, Gemma Chan and Tate McRae.

Her appearance received another layer of visibility when Calvin Klein’s official social-media account individually featured Eala from Fashion Week.

She also crossed paths with Filipina model Kelsey Merritt during NYFW, bringing together two Filipinas whose careers have taken them into very different international arenas.

Why fashion is looking at athletes

Eala’s presence also fits a much larger shift in the relationship between elite sport and fashion.

Athletes are increasingly visible around Fashion Week, luxury campaigns and designer collaborations, particularly as their public identities extend beyond competition.

New York offered plenty of evidence of that crossover this week. Tennis great Venus Williams was among the athletes attending NYFW events, while fashion publications increasingly treated sports personalities alongside actors and musicians in their coverage of the week’s front rows.

Eala arrives at that intersection with another advantage: a growing international audience.

Her matches overseas have increasingly become gathering points for Filipino supporters. At this year’s US Open, she played before packed crowds at Louis Armstrong Stadium, while her North American hard-court season followed a breakthrough Wimbledon run and her title in Washington.

That visibility is rooted first in performance.

Her rise to No. 18 followed her first entry into the world’s Top 20, while her 2026 Grand Slam results have pushed her deeper into tournaments than at any previous point in her professional career.

Fashion Week arrived in the middle of that ascent.

Fashion was already on her radar

Eala’s interest in fashion was not invented by her appearance in New York.

Anna Wintour had already publicly remarked on the young player’s curiosity about the industry, saying she could see that Eala wanted to learn more about it.

Eala herself has been more measured.

Rather than presenting herself as a fashion authority, she has spoken about clothing as another avenue for personality and self-expression — something tennis already allows her to explore.

That distinction matters.

Three front-row appearances do not establish a second career in fashion, nor do they need to.

What happened in New York is interesting on its own: during the same year that Eala broke into tennis’ Top 20 and reached new Grand Slam milestones, she received invitations to three prominent American fashion houses during her first NYFW.

Tory Burch, Michael Kors Collection and Calvin Klein Collection are among roughly 70 runway shows and presentations on the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s preliminary official schedule for the Spring/Summer 2027 season, which runs from September 10 to 15.

For a Filipino athlete whose international story has largely been measured in rankings, sets and tournament rounds, Fashion Week offered a different measure of how far her name is beginning to travel.
