Ten outstanding Filipino creators across diverse creative fields have been officially named National Artists, the government announced, celebrating their profound influence on the nation’s artistic heritage.
Acting Communications Secretary Dave Gomez confirmed Proclamation 1414, naming the 10 icons as National Artists.
Six living figures were recognized for their transformative careers:
- Nicanor Tiongson (Literature)
- Fred Buenaventura (Music)
- Imelda Cajipe Endaya (Visual Arts)
- Nunelucio Alvarado (Visual Arts)
- Rafael “Nonoy” Froilan (Dance)
- Maria Beatriz “Patis” Tesoro (Fashion Design)
Four visionary figures received the honor posthumously:
- Gabriel Formoso (Architecture)
- Armando “Bing” Lao (Film and Broadcast Arts)
- Gregorio Brillantes (Literature)
- Teodoro Hilado (Theater)
Jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the Order of National Artists represents the country’s ultimate tribute to individuals who have reshaped Philippine arts. The President confers the honor based on recommendations from both institutions.
Conferment of the order comes with prestigious honors and privileges. Awardees receive the official rank, title and insignia of a National Artist and a formal state citation. Living conferees are granted lifetime emoluments and benefits, including a tax-free cash award, a monthly life pension, comprehensive medical and hospitalization coverage and life insurance.
All honorees are guaranteed a place of distinction at state events, as well as the right to a state funeral.
