Marikina River Hits 2nd Alarm As Water Level Reaches 16 Meters

  • Metro
  • August 9, 2026

The Marikina River reached the second alarm level on Sunday morning as heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, caused its water level to rise to 16.0 meters.

According to the Marikina City Public Information Office, the second alarm was raised at 10:56 a.m. Under the city’s alert system, this level signals residents in affected areas to evacuate.

The first alarm is triggered when the water level reaches 15 meters, prompting residents to prepare for possible evacuation. Authorities previously raised the first alarm at around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday after the river’s water level reached 15.3 meters amid continued heavy rainfall. The second alarm requires residents in affected areas to evacuate once the water level hits 16 meters. Finally, the third alarm calls for forced evacuation once the water level reaches 18 meters.

PAGASA reported that the Southwest Monsoon is expected to continue bringing occasional rains over Metro Manila throughout Sunday.

The state weather bureau also warned of possible flash floods and landslides due to moderate to heavy rains and urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and monitor official weather updates.
