The Department of Energy (DOE) joined the groundbreaking ceremony for the 60-megawatt Naga Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Naga City, Cebu, a project expected to strengthen the reliability, flexibility, and resilience of the Visayas power grid.
Energy Undersecretary Mario Marasigan represented the DOE at the ceremony, which was also attended by officials from AboitizPower, the Province of Cebu, and the City Government of Naga.
The DOE said the project will convert a retired thermal power facility into a modern battery energy storage installation.
According to the agency, the Naga BESS is designed to provide fast-response ancillary services that will help stabilize the power grid, improve system resilience, support the region’s growing electricity demand, and allow the integration of more renewable energy sources into the Visayas grid.
The DOE added that the project forms part of its continuing efforts to promote innovative energy technologies and attract investments that strengthen energy security, improve grid reliability, and accelerate the country’s shift to cleaner and more sustainable energy.
