DND Reasserts PH Maritime Rights as Country Marks 10th Year of Arbitral Victory

The Department of National Defense (DND) has reaffirmed the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea as the country began commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal Award.

The DND opened the anniversary activities during the nationwide flag-raising ceremony on Monday, July 6, at Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo.

Officials and employees of the department and its attached bureaus attended the kick-off event, which underscored the government’s commitment to uphold the landmark ruling and defend the country’s maritime entitlements through international law.

The DND said the commemoration serves as a reminder of the Philippines’ legal victory in asserting its rights in the West Philippine Sea, particularly amid continuing challenges in the disputed waters.

The department also recognized the role of Filipinos, including fisherfolk, uniformed personnel, public servants, and other sectors, in protecting the country’s maritime interests and standing up for national sovereignty.

The 2016 Arbitral Tribunal Award, issued under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, invalidated China’s expansive “nine-dash line” claim and affirmed the Philippines’ sovereign rights over parts of the West Philippine Sea.

The DND said the ruling remains a vital legal foundation for the country’s position in the maritime dispute and its continuing efforts to preserve peace, stability, and the rule of law in the region.
