Venezuelan footballer Héctor “Kike” Bello is grieving the death of his wife, Andrea Bello, who reportedly died while protecting their young daughter during the powerful earthquakes that devastated parts of Venezuela.
Bello, a defender for Marítimo de La Guaira, confirmed the loss in an emotional Instagram tribute, saying Andrea used her final moments to shield their daughter, Alana, as their home collapsed during the disaster.
The child survived and was later rescued from the rubble, according to local football organization Cumaná de Campeones, which said Andrea was found dead after the collapse of the building where the family lived.
In his message, Bello called Andrea their daughter’s “favorite hero” and vowed to make sure Alana grows up knowing the depth of her mother’s love and sacrifice.
“I’ll tell her the story of how you saved her,” Bello wrote in Spanish, describing Andrea as a brave woman who never abandoned their child even in her final moments.
The footballer also addressed his daughter in a separate message, admitting that his heart was broken but promising to recover for her sake. He said he would protect Alana with the same devotion Andrea showed when she gave her life to save their child.
Andrea’s death has drawn an outpouring of sympathy from Venezuela’s football community, where Bello is known through Marítimo de La Guaira and his roots in Cumaná football. Messages of condolence have circulated online as teammates, supporters, and local sports groups mourned the family’s loss.
Her story has become one of the most heartbreaking human accounts to emerge from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, causing widespread destruction in coastal areas, including La Guaira and parts of Caracas.
The disaster has killed more than 1,400 people, with thousands more injured or still missing, according to international reports. Rescue workers, volunteers and foreign aid teams have continued searching through collapsed buildings as aftershocks and unstable structures complicate operations.
The tragedy has also shaken Venezuela’s sports world. Several athletes and relatives of sports figures have been reported among the dead or missing, underscoring how widely the disaster has cut across families, teams and communities.
For Bello, the public tributes have centered on one promise: that Alana will remember the mother who saved her.
He said Andrea would have wanted him to protect their daughter with his life, just as she did.
