Three people aboard an ambulance were injured after the emergency vehicle collided with a sport utility vehicle at the corner of Quezon Avenue and D. Tuazon in Barangay Lourdes, Quezon City, before dawn Friday.
CCTV footage showed the SUV crossing the intersection from D. Tuazon was heading toward Quezon Avenue when it was struck by the ambulance.
The impact caused the SUV to overturn, while the ambulance continued moving before hitting the center island.
Another CCTV angle showed that the traffic signal was red for vehicles along Quezon Avenue, while motorists coming from D. Tuazon had a green light.
The SUV driver said they were coming from D. Tuazon and turning left toward Cubao when the ambulance suddenly hit their vehicle. He maintained that they had the green light and were lawfully passing through the intersection.
The ambulance crew was reportedly returning to Cavite after transporting a patient to a hospital when the crash occurred.
The ambulance driver said the incident happened too quickly and that he could no longer stop in time. He also admitted that he was unable to confirm whether the traffic light on his lane was red or green at the time.
One ambulance passenger, however, claimed the SUV was also moving fast and had no headlights before the collision.
The damaged vehicles were removed from the road at around 3 am.
The Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector is investigating the incident to determine the cause of the crash and whether any party may be held liable.
