CFO Launches Filipino Language Tutorial Series to Reconnect Overseas Youth with Their Roots

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) has launched a new Filipino language tutorial series under its Virtual Sentro Rizal program to help overseas Filipinos, particularly second- and third-generation youth, strengthen their connection to Philippine culture and heritage.

Called “Filipino One-on-One,” the series features short instructional videos that introduce basic words, phrases, and everyday expressions in some of the country’s most widely spoken languages. Lessons cover practical topics such as greetings, self-introductions, family terms, and common conversational expressions.

According to the CFO, the initiative aims to address the gradual loss of linguistic and cultural ties among younger generations of Filipinos born and raised abroad. By making Philippine languages more accessible through digital platforms, the agency hopes to encourage overseas Filipino youth to reconnect with their roots.

The initial modules feature lessons in Tagalog, Ilocano, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Kapampangan, and Waray. A Bikolano module is scheduled for release in July and will feature acclaimed Bikolano poet and cultural advocate Kristian Cordero.

The CFO said the project seeks not only to teach vocabulary and pronunciation but also to provide learners with a deeper understanding of Filipino culture and identity.

Future lessons will focus on practical situations that overseas Filipinos may encounter when visiting the Philippines, such as asking for directions, purchasing pasalubong, and interacting with local communities.

The tutorial series forms part of the broader Virtual Sentro Rizal initiative, a digital platform that promotes Philippine culture, history, arts, and languages among overseas Filipino communities. Through the program, the CFO continues its efforts to strengthen the ties of Filipinos abroad with their homeland and preserve Filipino heritage across generations.
