PNP to Step Up Disaster Response as Super Typhoon Francisco Intensifies

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has stepped up preparedness and emergency response measures as Super Typhoon Francisco strengthens over the Philippine Sea, bringing enhanced southwest monsoon rains that may trigger heavy rainfall across several regions.

Authorities said the typhoon is not expected to make landfall but will continue to intensify the southwest monsoon or Habagat, which could result in heavy rains, strong winds, and rough sea conditions in multiple parts of the country.

Weather-affected areas may include Northern and Central Luzon, including the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative Region, as well as portions of Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and selected coastal communities in Western Visayas and Mindanao. Residents in flood-prone, low-lying, and landslide-prone areas were advised to remain vigilant.

PNP units nationwide have been placed on heightened alert and directed to coordinate closely with local government units, disaster risk reduction councils, and other partner agencies to ensure rapid response capability in case of emergencies.

Police personnel are on standby for possible evacuation assistance, rescue operations, traffic management, and other disaster-related duties as weather conditions evolve.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the force remains fully mobilized to respond to any eventuality as part of its disaster preparedness mandate.

“Ang ating kapulisan ay nakaantabay at handang tumugon anumang oras,” Nartatez said, adding that coordination with relevant agencies is ongoing to ensure timely assistance to affected communities.

He also urged the public to remain cautious and follow official advisories from local government units and the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), stressing the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.

“Pinapaalalahanan natin ang ating mga kababayan na huwag maging kampante,” he said, emphasizing that safety should remain the top priority.

As part of its preparedness measures, the PNP has ordered the prepositioning of personnel, communication equipment, and rescue assets in high-risk areas, particularly in flood-prone, landslide-prone, and coastal communities.

The police force said the measures are aligned with its disaster response framework aimed at ensuring rapid deployment during emergencies and maintaining public safety and order.

The PNP assured continued monitoring of the situation as the weather disturbance progresses, underscoring its commitment to assist affected communities under its “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas” initiative.
