Senate Leadership Stability Welcomed Ahead of Impeachment Trial

A former and an incumbent congressman on Wednesday welcomed the resolution of the Senate leadership dispute, saying the development restores institutional stability at a crucial time ahead of an impending impeachment trial.

Former Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers congratulated newly elected Senate President Win Gatchalian and said the Senate’s ability to settle internal divisions allows it to refocus on its constitutional mandate, particularly the conduct of impeachment proceedings.

“The nation expects its institutions to function above politics, especially at a time when public trust is being tested,” the former solon said, adding that delays caused by political tension could undermine public confidence in the justice process.

He stressed that impeachment proceedings must not be influenced by political considerations, noting that the Senate’s role is to evaluate evidence fairly and independently.

“Now is the time for the Senate to demonstrate that it can faithfully discharge its mandate—not in favor of any political personality, political party, or faction, but solely in the interest of the nation,” he said.

He added that the credibility of the process will depend on strict adherence to facts, evidence, and due process.

Meanwhile, Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. said the development restores institutional stability at a crucial time. He likewise expressed support for the new Senate leadership and called for wisdom and integrity as the chamber prepares to undertake what he described as one of its most consequential constitutional duties.

The Manila solon, who is also a pastor, said national leaders must be guided not only by legal responsibility but also moral conviction, especially during politically sensitive proceedings.

“With the Senate set to undertake one of the most solemn responsibilities assigned to it under the Constitution, we pray that its leaders will be guided by wisdom, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to truth and justice,” he noted.

He added that public trust in democratic institutions depends on how faithfully officials carry out their duties.

“The Senate has an important role to play in preserving public confidence in our institutions,” Abante said, expressing confidence that Gatchalian would lead with impartiality and seriousness.

Both lawmakers also underscored the importance of cooperation between the Senate and the House of Representatives in advancing legislative work alongside ongoing constitutional processes.
