Police Tightens Security in Mindanao Quake Zones Amid Power Outages

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has directed sustained and intensified police visibility in earthquake-affected areas in Mindanao still experiencing power interruptions, as authorities move to prevent crime and maintain public order amid continued disruptions.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered police units in Regions 11 and 12 to step up patrols in residential communities, commercial establishments, automated teller machine (ATM) locations, fuel stations, and other critical infrastructure that may be exposed to heightened security risks due to prolonged outages.

“We have strengthened our security presence in affected areas through mobile patrols, foot patrols, and coordination with local authorities. Our objective is to reassure residents of the presence of their police not only for their safety but also for response to any request for assistance,” Nartatez said.

The Department of Energy reported that electricity has yet to be fully restored in several quake-hit areas in Mindanao following the recent seismic event. As of June 14, data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed that 40 areas across Regions 11 and 12 remain without power.

Affected provinces include Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, where intermittent outages continue to affect mobility, commerce, and nighttime security conditions.

While restoration efforts are ongoing, the PNP said maintaining peace and order remains a priority, in line with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.

Nartatez has also instructed local commanders to closely coordinate with local government units, barangay officials, and utility providers to quickly address security concerns arising from the outages.

“The public can expect a sustained police presence in affected areas. We ask everyone to remain calm and continue working closely with local authorities as we carry out measures to keep communities safe and secure,” he said.

The PNP assured that its units remain on full alert and ready to respond to emergencies as affected communities continue recovery efforts and await full restoration of electricity services.
