Senate Independence, Anti-Corruption Push Mark Independence Day Amid Accountability Calls

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano marked Independence Day by emphasizing the personal and institutional costs of pursuing accountability and reform, as he reiterated calls for a stronger, corruption-free governance system.

In a Facebook livestream on June 12, 2026, Sen. Cayetano said efforts to uphold independence and transparency in government often come with significant political and personal consequences.

“Ang ating kalayaan ay may cost,” he said, warning that those who challenge entrenched interests may face public attacks, legal cases, or worse.

He linked current tensions in the Senate to broader struggles over leadership and control of key legislative investigations, including inquiries into alleged anomalies in flood control projects.

Sen. Cayetano also claimed that members of his political bloc have faced pressure from administration allies, including alleged threats of legal action in the course of ongoing Senate realignments. He cited the case of Senator Jinggoy Estrada, who was later arrested inside the Senate on a graft charge after previously aligning with his group.

He said he would continue pushing for what he described as an independent Senate and a “whole truth” approach to investigations, including the flood control issue and impeachment-related proceedings.

“We’re fighting na independent ang Senado at hindi utus-utusan lang ng Malacañang,” he said.

Sen. Cayetano warned that failure to confront corruption would ultimately harm ordinary Filipinos through weaker public services, limited education opportunities, and reduced employment prospects.

He called on lawmakers, media, and the public to support institutional independence and accountability, stressing that silence or complacency would carry long-term national costs.

“We need more independent heads to stand up and say, ‘Mali na ‘to. Lumaban tayo,’” he said.

He also urged continued vigilance against corruption and social ills, emphasizing a combination of civic action and prayer.
