Police Ready To Face Senate Gun Probe

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is ready to cooperate with any investigation into the May 13 gun-related incident inside the Senate, as calls mount for a separate inquiry into the matter.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police organization is prepared to explain its findings and submit to any lawful scrutiny over its investigation report.

“Our investigation report was a product of meticulous work and dedication of our personnel to establish what really happened based on the pieces of evidence obtained. We are ready to explain, and we are ready for any scrutiny,” Nartatez said.

The statement came amid reports that Senate leaders are seeking an independent investigation through the Senate Committee on Public Order.

The proposed inquiry is expected to summon officials from the PNP, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Department of Justice (DOJ), and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The PNP said its findings were based on technical work and evidence gathered by investigators.

The police investigation covered two incidents: the reported gunfire inside the Senate and the CCTV footage showing Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa leaving the chamber.

The PNP has already submitted its findings to the DOJ, which earlier tapped the police to assist in determining the circumstances before, during, and after the Senate gun-related incident.

“We in the PNP will always submit to lawful and rules-based processes, and our investigators are committed to fully cooperate with any investigating body in the spirit of truth and transparency,” Nartatez said.
