PNP Calls for Responsible Use of 911 Hotline

The public is urged to use the 911 emergency hotline responsibly as the government expands the Unified 911 system to more areas nationwide.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. issued the reminder following the activation of Unified 911 satellite command centers in Iloilo, Ilocos Norte, Isabela, and Leyte, a move aimed at improving emergency response in the regions.

Nartatez, who attended the June 4 activation of the satellite command center in Iloilo, said the expansion is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to ensure faster and more reliable police response for people in need.

He said the system includes safeguards against abuse, including a blocking mechanism for repeated prank calls. According to Nartatez, individuals who make three false emergency calls may lose access to the hotline, as the system can detect the number used and the caller’s location.

“The blocking mechanism is designed to deter repeated abuse of the 911 system, but we will ensure that legitimate emergency concerns are properly addressed. We encourage the public to use the hotline responsibly so that emergency services remain accessible to those who truly need assistance,” Nartatez said.

The PNP chief warned that abusing the emergency line could have serious consequences, including preventing prank callers from using the system during a real emergency.

“The 911 hotline is a lifeline that can save lives. We appeal to the public to use it responsibly and avoid prank calls, as every false report can delay assistance to people facing real emergencies,” he said.

Nartatez added that the success of the Unified 911 system depends not only on technology and police readiness, but also on public cooperation to ensure that emergency help reaches those who need it without delay.
