426 Cops on Standby Near Senate Amid Heightened Security

More than 400 police personnel have been deployed around the Senate complex in Pasay City amid continuing political tension in the chamber, the National Capital Region Police Office said Thursday.

NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said the deployment is part of heightened security measures to maintain peace and order in the area.

“As part of our mandate to promote peace and order, the NCRPO has implemented heightened security measures around the Senate,” Asilo said in a radio interview.

“We have deployed about 426 personnel. They are on standby around the Senate,” she added.

Asilo said another 1,041 police personnel are on standby in various police offices and may be deployed if needed.

“They are ready to respond in case they are needed to be deployed outside the Senate and in other areas we are monitoring,” she said.

Some supporters of former president Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte have gathered outside the Senate building, but Asilo said police have not monitored any major formation in the area.

Still, she said the NCRPO is prepared to send additional personnel if the situation requires it.

As of Thursday morning, no untoward incident had been recorded around the Senate complex, Asilo said.
