PAL Strengthens Board as Airline Pushes Expansion, Fleet Upgrade

Philippine Airlines has appointed corporate leader Edgar Chua and veteran aviation executive Datuk Captain Izham Ismail as independent directors, strengthening its board as the flag carrier pursues fleet modernization, network expansion, and long-term business transformation.

The appointments, which took effect on June 1, 2026, are expected to broaden PAL’s leadership bench with deeper expertise in corporate governance, sustainability, aviation operations, and global airline management.

Chua brings decades of experience across energy, technology, banking, manufacturing, and education. He previously served as country chairman of Shell companies in the Philippines and has held senior leadership, advisory, and independent directorship roles in major institutions.

Ismail, meanwhile, has more than 40 years of experience in airline operations and management. He previously served as group managing director of Malaysia Aviation Group, where he led operational, commercial, and organizational reforms.

His appointment also marks a return to PAL, where he began his aviation career in 1979 as a cadet pilot at the Philippine Airlines Aviation School.

“We are delighted to welcome Edgar Chua and Datuk Captain Izham Ismail to the Philippine Airlines Board of Directors,” PAL Holdings Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lucio Tan said.

“Mr. Chua’s extensive business leadership experience and Captain Izham’s global aviation expertise will be invaluable as Philippine Airlines continues to pursue sustainable growth, strengthen governance and expand its role in connecting the Philippines to the world,” he added.

PAL said the addition of Chua and Ismail would help support the airline’s growth strategy as it expands its international footprint, upgrades its fleet, and strengthens global partnerships.

The flag carrier currently operates scheduled nonstop flights from its hubs in Manila and Cebu to 29 domestic destinations and 40 international destinations across Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East.
