The Department of Energy (DOE) joined a multi-sector consultation and participative workshop on offshore wind development in Pili, Camarines Sur, as part of continuing efforts to promote inclusive and community-centered renewable energy initiatives.

The activity, dubbed the DUROS 2 Multi-Stakeholder Consultation and Solutions-Based Participative Workshop on Offshore Wind Farms, gathered representatives from various sectors to discuss both the opportunities and potential challenges surrounding offshore wind projects in San Miguel Bay.

Participants included fisherfolk, coastal communities, local government units, members of the academe, and civil society organizations, all of whom took part in open discussions focused on the future of offshore wind development in the area.

During the workshop, stakeholders raised important concerns related to livelihood protection, preservation of marine ecosystems, and equitable sharing of benefits that may result from renewable energy projects.

The consultation also served as a platform for affected communities to voice their perspectives and recommendations regarding the implementation of offshore wind initiatives, particularly in areas dependent on fishing and coastal resources.

According to the DOE, the workshop reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the country’s renewable energy transition remains science-based, transparent, and participatory.

It also emphasized the importance of engaging directly with communities that may be affected by large-scale energy projects to ensure that environmental sustainability and local welfare remain key considerations in policy development.

The DOE said meaningful stakeholder participation plays a vital role in balancing the country’s growing energy needs with the protection of livelihoods and natural resources.

By working closely with local communities and sectoral groups, the Department said it aims to develop policies that support clean energy expansion while safeguarding the interests of Filipino fisherfolk and coastal residents.

The consultation forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public engagement and encourage collaborative decision-making as the country accelerates the development of renewable energy sources, according to the agency.
