A senior United States Marine Corps general visited the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Command (WESCOM) headquarters on April 22, underscoring the deepening military partnership between Washington and Manila amid ongoing joint exercises and regional security efforts.

Lieutenant General Christian Wortman, commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, was received by Acting Commander Charles Merric Villanueva.

Wortman was accorded traditional sideboys honors upon arrival, signaling mutual respect between the Philippine and US forces. The visit formally opened with a welcome ceremony, followed by a staff-level engagement at Pag-asa Hall attended by WESCOM officials, joint task force commanders, and key personnel.

Among those present was Rear Admiral Vincent Sibala, head of the Western Naval Command and the most senior joint task force commander at the meeting.

Discussions during the engagement centered on strengthening defense cooperation, with both sides highlighting shared values, trust, and a joint commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region. Leaders emphasized the need to enhance interoperability and sustain joint initiatives to boost military readiness.

Wortman’s visit also coincides with the ongoing Balikatan Exercise, one of the largest annual military drills between the Philippines and the United States. He is expected to visit troops participating in the exercises to engage with personnel and reinforce support for joint operations.

The visit reflects the continuing efforts of both nations to deepen their long-standing alliance and respond to evolving security challenges through closer coordination and cooperation.
