Former Ateneo basketball head coach Thomas Antony “Tab” Baldwin appeared before the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) on Friday as part of the fact-finding investigation into the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
The appearance at Camp Crame came four days after Baldwin initially failed to attend the June 8 probe into the drowning incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, involving the two Ateneo players.
Authorities have not disclosed details of Baldwin’s statements during the investigation.
Interior Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla earlier warned that Baldwin could be cited for contempt if he again failed to cooperate with the inquiry. He also said the PNP is preparing to submit its investigation report to the Department of Justice as early as next week.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the investigation remains ongoing and comprehensive, stressing that investigators are still evaluating all possible angles before drawing conclusions.
“We owe it to the grieving families of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili to complete a full and impartial investigation before drawing any conclusion,” Nartatez said.
He added that rushing the process could result in overlooking critical facts needed to determine whether the incident was an accident, negligence, or a possible violation of law.
The PNP is also examining potential violations of the Anti-Hazing Law, noting that hazing may include not only physical harm but also exposure to dangerous conditions or psychological pressure.
“Through this impartial and comprehensive investigation, we hope that schools, coaches, and sports organizations would clearly understand that the safety and welfare of students must always come first,” PNP Chief Nartatez said.
