Southbound EDSA roadworks continue as DPWH targets October 19 reopening

  • October 18, 2026

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has resumed the second phase of the rehabilitation of southbound EDSA, covering selected sections between Monumento and Balintawak.

DPWH said the activity is part of the government’s ongoing program to improve the condition of major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, with the rehabilitation involving simultaneous, round-the-clock operations across three designated sections of the highway.

The affected areas include the stretch from Balintawak to Roosevelt near Zinnia Road, the section from near Kaingin Road to near the North Avenue Bus Station, and the portion from the Monumento Bus Station to Monumento along A. De Jesus Road.

Under the updated schedule, breaking and hauling operations began on October 16 at 10 p.m. On October 17, construction crews carried out base preparation, rebar installation, and concrete pouring on a 24-hour schedule. Cutting, sealant application, curing, and housekeeping activities were set for October 18, also operating around the clock.

The affected road sections are scheduled to reopen to motorists on Monday, October 19, at 5 a.m.

While specific lane closures remain in effect to accommodate the structural repairs, alternative lanes along the corridor remain open to traffic.

Motorists traveling along southbound EDSA are advised to exercise caution when passing through the work zones, follow posted traffic advisories, and consider alternative routes to minimize travel delays.

President Marcos earlier instructed the DPWH to complete the rehabilitation as quickly as possible without compromising quality, emphasizing the need to reduce inconvenience for motorists, commuters, and pedestrians who rely on EDSA daily.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon earlier said that he expects to complete the ongoing rehabilitation of EDSA by next year, with Phase 2 of the project now underway covering the Guadalupe-Orense to Monumento stretch.

Following a December 2025 overhaul that cut costs from P17 billion to P6 billion, the DPWH prioritized key areas and upgraded to longer-lasting Stone Mastic Asphalt. The revised strategy delivered early results when Phase 1, stretching from Roxas Boulevard to Orense, finished in April, more than two months ahead of its original timeline.
