Solon: Freedom Measured Through Governance, Heritage, and Opportunities

On the 128th Philippine Independence Day, leaders emphasized that the true measure of freedom lies in governance, protection of natural and cultural heritage, and the opportunities available to citizens. The national theme, “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan,” according to Sen. Loren Legarda, highlights the responsibility to live freedom daily, ensuring it translates into tangible benefits for society.

Independence is reflected not only in political processes but also in the legislation and policies that protect communities and create real opportunities. Measures such as clean air and solid waste management laws, climate change initiatives, support for small enterprises, and expanded access to quality education show how governance can directly improve lives. Freedom is experienced in safer communities, sustainable livelihoods for farmers and fisherfolk, and educational programs that build competence and character.

She said preserving culture and heritage is another vital aspect of a free nation. Independence gains depth when communities see their traditions safeguarded and celebrated. Projects supporting indigenous weaving, Schools of Living Traditions, cultural documentaries, and heritage documentation underscore the importance of maintaining identity while protecting historical landmarks. Laws strengthening cultural property protection and requiring local governments to map and preserve heritage resources further ensure that freedom is anchored in knowledge of the past.

The message of Independence Day is clear: liberty must be actively maintained through strong, accountable institutions, environmental stewardship, and the safeguarding of culture. By doing so, the freedoms won by past generations are kept alive and passed on securely to future Filipinos.
