Shallow Quake Recorded Off Cebu Waters, PHIVOLCS Monitoring Aftershocks

A shallow magnitude 2.5 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Cebu on Monday morning, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to continue monitoring seismic activity in the area.

In an earthquake bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the tremor occurred at 9:05 a.m. and was traced to waters about 24 kilometers southeast of Bogo City, Cebu, at a depth of two kilometers.

State seismologists said shallow earthquakes are typically more noticeable near the epicenter due to their proximity to the surface, although no immediate reports of damage or injuries were recorded as of posting.

The quake’s epicenter was located offshore between Cebu and Leyte islands near the Camotes Sea area, a region surrounded by several active fault systems and nearby trenches, including the Philippine Trench and Negros Trench.

PHIVOLCS said it has not monitored any significant aftershocks so far but continues to observe seismic activity in the area.

Authorities also advised residents to stay alert and continue monitoring official advisories for possible aftershocks or related developments.
