Senate Resolution Seeks Condolences to Iran Over Khamenei’s Passing

Senator Robinhood “Robin” Padilla has filed a resolution expressing the Senate’s sympathy and condolences to the government and people of Iran over the passing and state funeral of Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader.

Padilla filed Senate Resolution No. 501 as an act of diplomatic courtesy and international comity, saying the Philippines has long extended condolences to other nations following the death of their heads of state or government.

“This is not about taking sides in any conflict. This is about respect between nations, diplomacy, and humanity,” Padilla said.

The resolution also reaffirms the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Iran, which were established on January 22, 1964.

Padilla cited Iran’s continued diplomatic engagement with the Philippines, particularly efforts to help ensure safe passage for Philippine-flagged vessels, energy shipments, and Filipino seafarers through the Strait of Hormuz amid the 2026 Middle East conflict.

“Mahalaga sa atin ang kaligtasan ng mga Pilipino, lalo na ang ating mga seafarers. Kung may bansang tumutulong upang mapangalagaan sila sa gitna ng tensyon, marapat lamang na kilalanin natin ang diwa ng pagkakaibigan at diplomasya,” Padilla said.

The resolution seeks to transmit copies to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Manila, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and other concerned offices.

Padilla said the measure is meant to recognize the value of diplomacy and the Philippines’ continuing engagement with Iran, especially on matters affecting Filipino workers, seafarers, and national interests in the region.
