Authorities foiled an attempted tunnel-based robbery targeting a pawnshop in Barangay Nova Proper, Novaliches, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said.
The plot was uncovered late on April 22 after a security guard heard unusual noises coming from a manhole within the establishment’s premises. The incident was reported the following day, prompting an immediate response from authorities.
Operatives from Novaliches Police Station 4, led by Dave Capurcos, conducted an inspection and discovered a tunnel believed to have been dug by still-unidentified suspects in an attempt to access the pawnshop.
Police recovered several tools at the site, including a portable grinder, rechargeable batteries, cutting discs, hydraulic jacks, crowbars, and screwdrivers.
Investigators said the tunnel extended toward a nearby establishment, indicating a coordinated and premeditated plan.
No items were reported stolen, as the attempt was detected early and immediately addressed by security personnel and responding officers.
QCPD Director Randy Glenn Silvio emphasized the role of vigilance in preventing such incidents.
“This incident underscores the importance of alert security personnel and immediate coordination with the police,” he said.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend the suspects. The QCPD also urged business owners to report suspicious activities promptly to help strengthen security measures.
