PNP Tightens Security Around Senate Amid Protest Fears

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will increase its visibility around the Senate and nearby government facilities amid heightened political tensions and the possibility of more protest actions in the area.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has directed the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and concerned local police units to implement precautionary security measures around the Senate complex.

“Our current posture around the Senate is one of heightened vigilance but calibrated restraint. We have already directed the RD, NCRPO to maximize police visibility and establish strategic checkpoints around the Senate premises. Our deployment is strictly precautionary and proactive,” Nartatez said.

The move comes as recent political developments continue to draw public attention and fuel concerns over possible demonstrations near key government institutions.

Nartatez said the increased police presence is meant to ensure public safety, manage traffic, and prevent disruptions to government operations. He said the directive is in line with the instructions of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to maintain peace and order.

“The PNP remains entirely apolitical. Our sole mandate here is to maintain public order, manage traffic flow, and ensure that the Senate can conduct its vital legislative functions without any external disruption,” he said.

Aside from visibility patrols, police units will coordinate with Senate security officials, local government units, and traffic management authorities to ensure a unified security response in areas that may be affected by protest activities.

The PNP also ordered continuous threat monitoring and intelligence assessments to identify possible risks while respecting the right of groups to hold lawful assemblies.

Nartatez appealed to rally organizers and participants to keep their activities peaceful and orderly.

“We appeal to the organizers of these planned rallies to keep their activities peaceful and orderly. Do not allow your ranks to be infiltrated by provocateurs,” he said.

“Our police officers are on the ground not to suppress your voices but to protect lives and property. Any act of violence or vandalism will be dealt with immediately and strictly under the law,” he added.
