The Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) strengthened maritime cooperation with partner nations during a group sail and series of exercises from June 6 to 8 while en route to Hawaii for the Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2026.
Representing the Philippines were the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06) of the Philippine Navy and the BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) of the Philippine Coast Guard.

They sailed with the Republic of Singapore Navy’s RSS Steadfast (RSS 70) and the Italian Navy’s ITS Giovanni delle Bande Nere as part of activities meant to enhance operational readiness, improve interoperability and promote cooperation among participating navies and maritime agencies.
Among the key drills was the Replenishment at Sea Approach by BRP Miguel Malvar, which maneuvered close to 80 yards from ITS Giovanni delle Bande Nere, simulating a supply ship.
The exercise tested a critical naval capability that allows ships to sustain extended operations through fuel or supply transfer while at sea.
The Philippine Navy also highlighted its coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, saying the joint participation reflected both services’ shared commitment to “One Country, One Strong Maritime Security Partnership.”
The group sail forms part of the transit toward RIMPAC 2026, the world’s largest international maritime exercise, where participating nations are expected to further build trust, strengthen interoperability and reinforce cooperation in support of a safe, secure and rules-based maritime environment.
The Philippine Navy said the activity supports its continuing modernization efforts, partnership-building and readiness to secure the country’s seas while contributing to regional peace and stability.
