NLEX Boosts Flood Response, Road Safety Measures for Rainy Season

NLEX Corporation has intensified its rainy season preparedness measures to enhance flood response, maintain traffic flow, and ensure the safety of motorists along its expressway network.

The company said it carried out extensive drainage clearing during the dry months and completed maintenance of pumps and detention facilities in Balintawak and Paso de Blas in Valenzuela to improve water management capacity during heavy rains.

As part of its broader flood mitigation efforts, NLEX also extended clean-up operations beyond its expressway network in support of the government’s Oplan Kontra Baha program. From January to May, teams removed garbage and silt from major waterways in Valenzuela, Caloocan, and Manila that are linked to flooding risks along the expressway.

NLEX President and General Manager Luis Reñon said clearing surrounding waterways helps improve stormwater flow and reduces the risk of overflow reaching key road sections.

The company also expressed coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and local government units, while urging the public to help keep waterways free of waste.

To strengthen response capabilities, NLEX has pre-positioned flood mitigation equipment, including portable barriers for low-lying sections, rescue boats, and other emergency assets. It has also installed early-warning cameras at critical creek crossings to monitor water levels in real time and support rapid deployment of response teams.

In addition, maintenance crews have been deployed for pavement repairs across the NLEX and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) networks, including an ongoing asphalt overlay project between Ciudad de Victoria and Bocaue.

Other preventive measures include improved roadside drainage systems and tree trimming to reduce hazards from falling branches during strong winds.

NLEX said emergency and traffic management teams will remain on full alert throughout the rainy season in coordination with government agencies and local authorities to ensure road safety and continuity of operations.
