Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has ordered daily monitoring of water-borne diseases, influenza-like illnesses, leptospirosis, and dengue following weeks of persistent rain and flooding in the capital.
The illnesses, collectively referred to as W.I.L.D. diseases, typically become more prevalent during the rainy season as contaminated water, mosquito breeding sites, and exposure to floodwaters increase health risks.
Domagoso directed Manila Health Department chief Dr. Grace Padilla to convene the heads of the city’s seven public hospitals and strengthen coordination on disease surveillance, case reporting, and emergency preparedness.
Padilla was also instructed to submit daily reports on W.I.L.D. cases to help city officials identify possible outbreaks and respond quickly to any rise in infections.
The city government said Manila’s public hospitals, health centers, and medical personnel are prepared for a possible increase in patients.
Officials urged residents to avoid contact with floodwaters whenever possible, eliminate mosquito breeding sites, observe proper hygiene, and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
