Inday, Habagat Leave 26 Dead, 14 Missing as One Million Reel From Disasters

The death toll from Super Typhoon Inday and the southwest monsoon it enhanced has risen to 26, while 14 people remain missing and about one million have been affected across several regions, the Office of Civil Defense said Wednesday.

OCD Deputy Spokesman Diego Mariano said four additional fatalities were reported, with most deaths caused by rain-induced landslides and drowning.

Sarangani recorded the highest number of fatalities at 10, followed by Lanao del Sur with seven. Four deaths were reported in Davao Occidental, two each in Zamboanga Sibugay and Bukidnon, and one in Iloilo.

Nine people were injured, all due to landslides. Benguet, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte recorded two injuries each, while Marinduque, Davao Occidental and Sarangani reported one each.

Of the 14 people still missing, five were from Davao Occidental and four from Lanao del Sur. Two each were reported missing in Zamboanga del Sur and Sarangani, while one was recorded in Maguindanao del Sur.

The weather disturbances affected about 244,000 families, or roughly one million individuals. Around 5,000 families comprising 22,000 people were staying in 86 evacuation centers.

Mariano said the government had distributed ₱73.06 million worth of assistance to affected families.

The OCD initially placed infrastructure damage at ₱4.18 million and agricultural losses at ₱12.5 million.

It also reported that 766 houses were completely destroyed, while 853 sustained partial damage.
