HISTORIC SURGE AT AICHI-NAGOYA: Inside Team Philippines’ Record-Breaking 2026 Asian Games Campaign

Across the stadiums, arenas and venues of Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, a red, white, blue and yellow wave has swept through the 20th Asian Games.

Fielding its largest continental delegation in over three decades with more than 450 athletes competing across 39 sports, Team Philippines has transformed potential into performance. From Olympic legends confirming their world-class status to dramatic breakthroughs in emerging sports, the nation is rewriting its sporting story on the biggest stage in Asia.

The foundation of the Philippine medal surge rests on two familiar powerhouses, both proving that their world-class caliber remains unmatched across the continent. Fresh off his historic double-gold performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Carlos Yulo arrived in Nagoya with high expectations and delivered instantly. Yulo opened the Philippine gold tally by taking the top spot on the podium in the men’s floor exercise with a score of 14.666, and he doubled his tally days later on the vault to seal a two-gold performance. In an emotional highlight for the team, his younger brother Eldrew Yulo captured bronze in the horizontal bar, marking a historic multi-generational podium presence for Philippine gymnastics. In track and field, pole vault star Ernest John Obiena successfully dominantly defended his Asian Games crown by clearing 5.91 meters, breaking his own Asian Games record set in Hangzhou to lock in gold and re-assert his reign as Asia’s top pole vaulter.

Beyond the top of the podium, Philippine athletes fought their way into finals across high-stakes combat and team competitions. The Gilas Pilipinas Women’s 3×3 team, with Kacey Dela Rosa, Ammyah Espanol, Kennan Ka and Maria Victoria Pasilang, delivered an incredible campaign, pushing all the way to the gold medal match against host nation Japan to earn a silver medal.

In mixed martial arts, Jean Claude Saclag powered through a competitive bracket to capture silver in the men’s 65kg division, while Juliana Candelaria earned silver in women’s individual poomsae taekwondo.

Veteran archer Amaya Amparo Cojuangco shot with ice-cold precision to secure silver in the women’s individual compound event and the women’s doubles sepak takraw squad of Nelly Jay Salon, Abegail Sinogbuhan and Jean Marie Sucalit secured silver in a historic run to the finals.

What distinguishes the 2026 campaign from previous editions is the depth and breadth of sports generating hardware for the country, showing a delegation that is diversifying rapidly beyond traditional strongholds.

Team SIBOL captured the country’s first-ever official Asian Games medals in esports through strong runs in Pokémon UNITE and Honor of Kings.

In surfing’s official Asian Games debut, Jayuard Alciso bagged a historic bronze in the Men’s Shortboard event.

Tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala claimed a bronze medal in Women’s Singles, while the Women’s Soft Tennis Team broke a 32-year Asian Games medal drought in the discipline with a bronze of their own.

Track and field saw John Cabang in the 110m hurdles and Victoria Bossong in the 800m earn bronze medals to complement Obiena’s gold, while karate and mixed martial arts added bronze medals across martial arts divisions, thanks to the Women’s Team Kata, Marie June Adriano and Carlos Alvarez.

As competition takes its final stretch, Team Philippines has already sent a clear signal to the rest of the region: the country’s athletic renaissance is no longer confined to isolated individual triumphs, but is backed by a broad, versatile and highly competitive talent pipeline.
