A tragedy struck Ateneo de Zamboanga University after a Grade 9 student opened fire inside the school campus, killing a Grade 10 student before turning the gun on himself, police said.
According to a police report, the suspect, classified by authorities as a Child in Conflict with the Law (CICL), allegedly attacked fellow students before escaping to an upper floor of the facility.
“The CICL subsequently fled to the 5th floor of the school building, where he allegedly turned the firearm on himself and committed suicide,” the report said.
Investigators are conducting a background check on the suspect and working to establish how he managed to bring two firearms onto campus premises. Police are currently tracing the identity of the registered owner of the weapons and evaluating potential security lapses by the school administration.
