Google is redrawing the line between free and paid access to Gemini, with some of the artificial intelligence platform’s more capable models set to become unavailable to non-paying users beginning October 9.
The change affects Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts.
Users without a Google AI subscription will retain Gemini, but their model choice will be narrowed to Flash-Lite. Access to Flash and Pro, which are currently available to free users, will be removed under the new arrangement.
The distinction matters because the three models are designed for different levels of work.
Google describes Flash-Lite as an efficient model suited to common tasks such as summarizing information and brainstorming. Flash adds greater reasoning capability while maintaining speed, while Pro is positioned as the company’s more advanced option for demanding tasks including mathematics and coding, as well as working across text, files, images and videos.
The October change therefore does not place Gemini itself entirely behind a paywall. Instead, it separates access to its models according to subscription level.
Google AI Plus subscribers will continue to have Flash-Lite and Flash but will lose access to Pro. Unlike the October 9 start for users without a subscription, Google said Plus subscribers will receive an email indicating when the change will apply to their accounts.
The higher Google AI Pro and AI Ultra tiers will retain access to Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro.
Model availability is also separate from Gemini’s usage limits. Google determines allowances partly according to the complexity of prompts, the model and features being used, and the length of conversations. More computationally demanding models and reasoning settings can consume those allowances faster.
The company has also been differentiating Gemini plans through features and usage capacity, giving paid subscribers higher limits and access to additional AI capabilities.
For people who rely mainly on Gemini for straightforward questions, summaries or brainstorming, a free version will remain available after the change. Those who specifically use Flash or Pro, however, will need an eligible paid tier to continue selecting those models.
The new model restrictions are scheduled to start rolling out to personal accounts without a Google AI subscription on October 9.
