Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday called on local government units and concerned agencies to inspect and audit all operating pet service providers, including crematoriums, to ensure that such businesses are licensed, environmentally compliant, and held to clear standards of integrity so no family is ever subjected to “cruelty.”
Gatchalian made the call after reports said that the remains of 29 deceased pets placed in sacks were abandoned in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan last October 29, which he said was a “distressing discovery” as it was a violation of environmental and sanitation laws.
He was referring to reports that animal remains placed in sacks were reportedly dumped in Barangay Minuyan, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan by the personnel of a pet crematorium in Cavite.
“The distressing discovery of 29 deceased pets abandoned in sacks in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan is a blatant violation of environmental and sanitation laws. Worse, grieving pet owners paid for a decent final farewell for their beloved companion animals only for them to be dumped like garbage on a roadside. This is a clear case of fraud and those responsible for such an offense must be held accountable,” Gatchalian said in a statement.
He said the Bureau of Animal Industry can lead the inspection of pet service providers, in coordination with LGUs.
