Fitch Affirms Philippine Airlines ‘BB’ Rating on Post-Restructuring Gains

Fitch Ratings has assigned Philippine Airlines (PAL) an inaugural “BB” Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) with a stable outlook, marking a key external validation of the flag carrier’s financial recovery and operational stabilization following its restructuring.

The rating agency said its assessment reflects PAL’s strengthened business profile, improved financial position, and more disciplined operating performance in the years after its corporate restructuring, which helped reset its balance sheet and cost structure.

Fitch cited several factors supporting the rating, including the airline’s diversified route network, relatively stable liquidity position, competitive cost base, and a more measured approach to fleet expansion. It also pointed to tighter operational discipline as a key improvement in the post-restructuring period.

The “stable outlook” signals Fitch’s expectation that PAL                                                                    will maintain prudent financial management while pursuing controlled growth, backed by sufficient liquidity and gradually improving credit metrics over the medium to long term.

PAL president Richard Nuttall welcomed the rating, describing it as recognition of the airline’s ongoing efforts to rebuild its foundations.

“We welcome Fitch Ratings’ assessment of Philippine Airlines and view it as recognition of the progress we have made in strengthening our business, financial and operational fundamentals,” Nuttall said.

“We remain focused on maintaining financial prudence while delivering world-class excellence and elevating the experience we provide to our customers at every stage of their journey,” he added.

The airline said it continues to prioritize fleet modernization and service enhancements as part of its broader strategy to improve efficiency, expand connectivity, and support the recovery of the country’s travel and tourism sector.

PAL currently operates scheduled nonstop flights from its Manila and Cebu hubs to 29 domestic destinations and 40 international points across Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East, maintaining its position as the Philippines’ flag carrier in a highly competitive aviation market.
