‘Esmiringhoy,’ the word that left Filipinos laughing and linguists scratching their heads

It sounds like a magical spell, a tropical delicacy, or the name of a distant barangay. But “esmiringhoy” has a meaning that is considerably more romantic—and a little harder to explain at the dinner table.

It sounds like a magical spell, a tropical delicacy, or the name of a distant barangay. But “esmiringhoy” has a meaning that is considerably more romantic—and a little harder to explain at the dinner table.

The Bisaya slang expression recently found itself in the national spotlight, leaving curious Filipinos wondering whether they had stumbled upon a new word or an elaborate inside joke.

For the uninitiated, it sounds suspiciously like something Harry Potter might shout while waving a wand. Unfortunately for aspiring wizards, it has nothing to do with magic, although it does involve a certain kind of chemistry.

The expression gained widespread online attention following an October 17 episode of Raffy Tulfo in Action, where married couple Evelyn and Ronald Batuigas discussed their marital problems.

During the interview, Evelyn complained about her husband’s alleged infidelity and his reported reluctance to engage in physical intimacy, which he attributed to medical concerns.

Then came the unexpected linguistic bombshell.

“Hindi daw siya puwedeng mag-esmiringhoy,” Evelyn said.

And just like that, a serious marital dispute became an unexpected vocabulary lesson for the nation.

In the context of the interview, “esmiringhoy” refers to physical intimacy between romantic partners. It is a playful euphemism for something consenting adults generally prefer to keep private.

Depending on regional usage, however, the expression may also refer to fooling around or mischievous behavior.

According to linguist Dr. Benjamin Mendillo Jr. of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, the expression has been associated with “esmi,” a colloquial term for spouse, and “iring,” the Bisaya word for cat. Its precise etymology remains uncertain.

The word also has alternative spellings, including “esmeringhoy” and “ismiringhoy,” and is not listed in the commission’s standardized dictionary.

But Filipino slang has never needed a dictionary’s permission to become famous.

As clips of the interview circulated online, netizens quickly transformed the expression into meme material. Even beauty queen and television host Joy Barcoma joined the conversation, asking on Threads:

“DADDY WHAT’S ESMIRINGHOY PO.”

Despite its sudden popularity, the expression is not entirely new. Online references reportedly date back to at least 2012, suggesting that the internet merely introduced an existing regional expression to a much wider audience.

While the original interview involved genuine marital difficulties, the word’s viral moment highlights the richness and humor of Philippine regional languages.

After all, sometimes a single unfamiliar word is enough to turn an entire comment section into an unofficial linguistics seminar.

So, the next time someone asks what “esmiringhoy” means, there is no need to panic, consult a spell book, or summon a language expert.

Just explain it politely.

Because when it comes to esmiringhoy, understanding the word is educational. Demonstrating it is an entirely different conversation.
