The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is stepping up monitoring of power generation companies operating in the Visayas and Mindanao regions following recurring power disruptions and depleted electricity reserves.
ERC Legal Service Director Atty. Maria Corazon Gines stated that forced and emergency plant outages serve as the primary factor behind the thinning power reserves across both island groups.
Gines said the commission will review operational logs and conduct investigations to evaluate whether generation companies exceeded their designated allowable outage thresholds.
Gines also said generation companies proven to have breached allowable outage limits will face regulatory fines and sanctions.
The heightened regulatory scrutiny aims to mitigate outage risks by ensuring power producers strictly adhere to prescribed operational and maintenance standards.
