Driver Lost Control in Payatas Crash That Killed Five Detainees, Probe Finds

  • April 27, 2026

The fatal Payatas Road crash that killed five persons under police custody (PUPCs) last week was caused by the driver losing control of the police vehicle, according to initial findings.

The April 24, 2026 incident involved a police mobile from Police Station 15 transporting detainees to the Quezon City Jail–Payatas Facility when it veered off course and slammed into a wall along Payatas Road.

“The vehicle lost control and struck a wall along Payatas Road, resulting in injuries to all occupants,” the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said, noting that five detainees later died despite receiving medical attention.

One detainee remains confined at Quezon City General Hospital and is now in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Four police personnel were also injured and are undergoing treatment at the PNP General Hospital. One officer remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, with multiple injuries including fractured ribs, a broken shoulder, head trauma, and internal bleeding.

Authorities said the driver tested negative for alcohol and that standard procedures were followed prior to transport. However, charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide have been filed as the investigation continues.

Further investigation is ongoing to determine whether other factors contributed to the crash.
