DOTr Offers Free LRT-2 Santolan Parking to Boost Ridership Amid Fuel Crisis

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will open free parking for commuters at the Santolan Station of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) starting April 27, 2026, as part of efforts to encourage more motorists to shift to public transportation amid rising fuel prices linked to the ongoing oil supply concerns in the Middle East.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the initiative follows President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s directive to promote the use of mass transit systems as a practical alternative for vehicle owners affected by fluctuating fuel costs.

“The President has ordered us to encourage vehicle owners to ride our trains. That is why we have thought of other ways to help not only commuters but also vehicle owners who travel every day,” Lopez said.

He added that the program aims to ease the financial burden of motorists while improving travel efficiency through train use.

“Apart from the 50-percent discount on fares when riding the LRT-2, parking fees for passengers with vehicles are also free. This will save a lot compared to consuming gasoline or diesel, which are still expensive. Not only that, their journey to their destination will be faster,” he said.

Under the program, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) will provide complimentary parking at the Santolan Station from 4am to 11:30pm  daily. Parking slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Motorists availing of the free parking must secure a parking stub from LRTA security personnel at the Santolan Station parking area. The stub must be validated at the LRT-2 passenger assistance office before being presented to security personnel upon exit.

The DOTr said the measure is part of broader efforts to improve commuter convenience while easing pressure on transportation expenses.
