The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday said no Filipinos have been reported affected by mass protests in France and Italy stemming from rising living costs and declining public services.
“Per the latest reports from the Philippine Embassy in Paris and the Philippine Consulate General in Milan, no Filipinos have been reported to be involved or harmed in the protests,” DFA spokesperson Analyn Ratonel told reporters.
Rioting erupted in several French cities on Saturday as demonstrations over escalating living costs and deteriorating public services turned violent.
Reports indicated that some groups targeted public buildings, looted luxury boutiques and supermarkets, and engaged in clashes with police officers.
In Italy, police clashed with protesters in Milan on Sunday after demonstrators allegedly threw stones and looted retail shops during rallies against poor public services and high living expenses.
Amid the ongoing civil unrest, the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Milan issued an advisory urging Filipinos residing in northern Italy to exercise extreme caution.
“In light of the recent violent protests and clashes in Milan, Bologna, Turin, and Bergamo, we are asking everyone to please exercise extreme caution. If possible, avoid large crowds, known protest areas, and major city squares, especially in the evenings,” the consulate said.
The PCG also urged Filipinos to report any fellow nationals affected by, injured in, or involved in the unrest so the consulate can monitor the situation and provide necessary assistance.
