CIDG Seizes P375K Illegal Cigarettes, Arrests Three in Tagum Ops

Three men were arrested after authorities seized P375,000 worth of alleged illegal cigarettes during a law enforcement operation in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said its Davao del Norte Provincial Field Unit, together with the Tagum City Police Station, carried out the operation in Barangay Cuambogan from around 10 pm on May 13 until 1 am on May 14.

CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II said the suspects, identified only by their aliases “Cesar,” “Lando,” and “Jo,” were caught allegedly selling and trading cigarettes that lacked the required graphic health warnings and Internal Revenue tax stamps.

Authorities confiscated 15 master cases of cigarettes with an estimated value of P375,000.

Police said the suspects may face complaints for violation of Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law, and Republic Act No. 8424, or the Tax Reform Act of 1997.

Morico said the RA 10643 is intended to promote public health, raise awareness on the risks of tobacco use, and protect consumers from substandard tobacco products. He added that tax stamp requirements help support proper revenue collection and prevent the sale of illicit goods.

The CIDG said the operation forms part of its intensified nationwide campaign against illegal cigarettes, in line with the directive of Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.

The CIDG commended its regional and Davao del Norte field units for the operation and said it would continue pursuing traders and sellers of illicit tobacco products across the country.
