ASEAN Chair and Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro will lead an informal meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers with Myanmar’s counterpart U Tin Maung Swe on July 12 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkow will host the meeting.

The gathering marks the first in-person meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers and Myanmar since the 2021 military coup.

It follows the directive of ASEAN leaders during the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu for foreign ministers to continue constructive and principled engagement with Myanmar, in line with the Five-Point Consensus.

During the meeting, ASEAN foreign ministers are expected to receive a briefing from U Tin Maung Swe on the latest developments in Myanmar and exchange views on the regional bloc’s engagement with the country.

Discussions are also expected to focus on concrete measures to end violence, promote constructive dialogue among concerned parties, and strengthen humanitarian assistance, consistent with the Five-Point Consensus.

ASEAN reaffirmed that Myanmar remains an integral member of the regional bloc as it continues to pursue peaceful and constructive engagement to address the country’s ongoing challenges.
