Army’s 2ID Sharpens Drone Skills for Future Battlefield

The Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division is turning to drone technology as it prepares troops for the changing demands of modern warfare.

The 2ID successfully held the Drone Racing Fellowship 2026 on Saturday, May 16, bringing together personnel from elite and specialized Army units for an activity focused on innovation, adaptability, and operational awareness.

The event was spearheaded by 2ID commander Maj. Gen. Ramon Zagala, joined by participants from the 2nd Infantry Division, First Scout Ranger Regiment, Special Forces Regiment (Airborne), Reserve Command Philippine Army, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, Light Reaction Regiment, and other specialized units.

Before the competition proper, participants took part in track walkthroughs, practice flights, and qualifying rounds that tested their precision, control, focus, and quick decision-making while navigating difficult aerial courses.

More than a competition, the fellowship underscored the expanding role of drone systems in reconnaissance, situational awareness, and modern military operations. It also allowed soldiers to better understand emerging technologies that are becoming increasingly relevant to future operational environments and evolving mission requirements.

“Tomorrow’s operations will demand not only courage in the field, but also adaptability in technology. We must continue learning, evolving, and preparing our personnel for the changing operational environment. If we will not adapt, we will fail,” Zagala said.

“Drone technology is already here. Future wars will be fought with it, and our ability to harness it will provide a differentiation,” he added.

The 2ID said the Drone Racing Fellowship 2026 forms part of its continuing efforts to sustain gains in internal security operations while preparing for external defense.
