The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has expressed support for Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. following sanctions imposed by the government of the People’s Republic of China on the Cabinet official and his family.
In a statement, the AFP said the sanctions should be viewed not only as actions directed at an individual official but also as an issue involving the Philippines’ sovereign rights and policy positions in the West Philippine Sea and its Exclusive Economic Zone.
The military cited Teodoro’s consistent position on defending Philippine sovereignty and maritime entitlements under international law, as well as his role in addressing activities described as threats to national security, including illegal operations and espionage-related concerns.
The AFP reiterated its constitutional mandate to protect the state and the Filipino people, stressing its rejection of any attempt to intimidate or pressure officials performing their duties in defense of national interests.
It added that no external action will diminish its resolve to safeguard Philippine sovereignty, territorial integrity, and maritime domain.
