Cayetano Pushes for ‘Independent Senate’ Focused on National Priorities

Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday called for an “independent Senate” that prioritizes pressing national issues such as inflation, education, and agriculture amid ongoing political tensions in the chamber.

In a May 25 manifestation, Cayetano urged his colleagues to shift public discussions away from leadership disputes and political alignments, emphasizing that debates over Senate posts should not overshadow issues directly affecting Filipinos.

“Twenty-four of us make up the Senate. If 11 are saying ‘Replace Cayetano’ and 13 are talking about a Constitutional Assembly, that’s what people are hearing—not discussions about inflation, the economy, or public health,” he said.

He stressed that senators should use the Senate’s platform to address matters that impact everyday citizens. “Let’s talk about agriculture, agricultural smuggling, the current state of our crops, fertilizer issues, and the 7% inflation. Let’s also discuss how long our fuel supply will last,” he added.

Cayetano highlighted the importance of maintaining an independent Senate capable of working with the Executive branch while upholding the Constitution’s checks and balances. “Why can’t we unite—minority and majority—and be an independent Senate? Not to confront the executive, but to collaborate, while still serving as a check,” he said.

He announced a caucus on Tuesday, May 26, bringing both blocs together as the Senate prepares for impeachment proceedings and remaining legislative business ahead of the June 6 sine die adjournment.

“I am the Senate President, but I am also the servant leader of all 24 Senators. I am here at your service,” Cayetano said. “If allowed by the Minority bloc, tomorrow we can discuss the impeachment, but let’s also talk about our priorities—health, education, and other pressing concerns. Let’s use the last few session days to focus on what matters most to Filipinos.”
